Sport England’s Active People Survey 3 shows we are now 115,000 closer to our legacy goal of getting one million people playing more sport by 2012/13. The encouraging news comes despite a fall in the amount of money people are spending on sport and recreation during these challenging economic times. (193,000 people are interviewed each year.)

Key findings from the research include:

  1. The number of adults doing athletics at least once a week is up by 127,600.
  2. 635,000 more people are playing sport regularly than in 2005
  3. The number of adults in England who play sport at least three times a week has reached 6.93 million, continuing the positive trend of the past four years
  4. The number of men playing sport three times a week has risen by 176,000 to 4.203 million
  5. Cycling and athletics have delivered a combined increase of over 240,000 weekly participants.
